Business Objects Security Basics

| June 20, 2012

As you all know, beginning BOE 3.1, SAP introduced tier based security in Business Objects; applying rights based on Classes and Subclasses. This is a very useful addition that made all of us Admins’ lives easier. I’m gonna show you guys the effects of applying a particular right to Class vs Subclass.

We could have a scenario where SALES folder has 2 Subfolders with some reports

Sales …………………………….. (folder)  ……..   – Level 1

——— Sales Reports 1

——— Sales Reports 2

—- Expense ……………………. (sub folder) …    – Level 2

———- Expense Report 1

———- Expense Report 2

—- Leads ………………………. (sub folder) …    – Level 2

———– Leads Report 1

———– Lead Report 2

Now, say we are told that Group X should have access to Sales reports only, Group Y should have access to Expense Reports and Group Z should have access to every report in SALES folder.

Then, the security model would be like this:

Group X ………… ‘View Objects’ for SALES folder ……… Apply to CLASSES

Group Y ………… ‘View Objects’ for EXPENSE folder …. Apply to CLASSES

Group Z ………… ‘View Objects’ for SALES folder ……… Apply to CLASSES AND SUBCLASSES

Let’s take a look in the video.
